![]() ![]() Once you’ve developed a useful re-usable function add it to your PyXLL Python project. Write Excel functions entirely in Python in a Jupyter notebook and test them out in real-time. Use a Jupyter notebook as a scratch-pad for trying out Python code. Use Excel as an interactive playground for organizing and visualizing your data, seamlessly switching to Python for more sophisticated tools. Well, now you can use Excel for working with your data and use Python to work on the same data. Now you have a complete Jupyter notebook running inside of Excel! But what is this good for? How is this better than running a notebook outside of Excel? If you are working across multiple screens this can make things easier! To upgrade to the latest version run pip install -upgrade pyxll-jupyter. Starting with version 0.2.0 of the pyxll-jupyter package you can open the Jupyter notebook in a browser as well as in an Excel task pane. To create a new notebook select the “New” button followed by “Python 3”. In the Jupyter panel you can select an existing notebook or create a new one. This panel is part of the Excel interface and can be un-docked or docked in a different location by dragging it. There are many other nice features about Jupyter notebook, we won’t talk too much here, but you can find many tutorials online to learn more.Once both the PyXLL Excel add-in and the PyXLL-Jupyter package are installed start Excel and you will see a new “Jupyter” button in the PyXLL tab.Ĭlicking this button opens the Jupyter notebook in a side panel in your Excel workbook. In the notebook, you can move the cell up or down, insert or delete cell, and so on. To run the code or renter the markdown in the notebook is simple, just press Shift + Enter. You can search for ‘Markdown cheatsheet’ to get a quick start with markdown. The markdown cell is a place you can type the description in rich text format, see the following figure as an example. Two important cell types are code and markdown, the code cell is where you type your code and can run the code in it. In the notebook, a cell is a place where you can write your code or text in it, and run this cell to only execute code within this cell block. The most important things to know the Jupyter notebook are the cells and the different types. The toolbar and menu is self-explanatory when you hover your cursor to the toolbar, it will show you the function of the tool and press the menu, it will show you the drop down list. We will use the Python kernel, therefore, choose Python 3 kernel.Īfter you create a new Python notebook, it will look like the following figure. ![]() You can use Jupyter to run some other kernels as well, for example, in the following figure, there are Bash and Julia kernels that you could run as a notebook, but you need to install them first. We can create a new Python notebook by selecting the Python 3, usually this is called Python kernel. In this dashboard, you can see some important features that labeled in red: you can see all the files in the current folder, show all the running notebooks, and create a new notebook or others such as text file, folder and a terminal. When you navigate to the browser, you will see a dashboard. This is essentially creating a local server to run in your browser. Then you will see the Jupyter notebook dashboard in the browser, the default address is: that is at the localhost with port 8888 as shown in the following figure (if the port 8888 is taken by other Jupyter notebooks, then it will automatically use another port).
